Forest Health Woods Walk

May 25 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

$10

forest healthAt times, it seems like no matter where we turn, there is something new threatening our forests. By now, you’ve probably heard of the emerald ash borer and the hemlock woolly adelgid. But how about the processes of mesophication and densification? What’s happening to all the beech trees and where did the American elm and chestnut go? Though these changes may sound alarming, they are not always as threatening as we believe. Forests are vastly complex, ever-evolving, and most importantly, resilient. Pests and disease can serve as important indicators for forest ecosystem health. As stewards of the Catskill forest, it’s important for us to recognize these indicators when making forest management decisions.

Join Zane Lawyer, CFA’s Education Arborist, for a forest health walk-through of Cornell Extension’s Siuslaw Model Forest. We’ll discuss the role of pests and disease to a functioning forest, ways they can be managed, and what it means for a forest to be ‘healthy’. Be prepared for a moderate 2-mile hike in all weather conditions.

We would like to thank the Siuslaw Model Forest for helping make this event possible.
