Pit & Mound

August 21, 2018

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST?
Went for a hike last week near Peekamoose Mountain & saw great examples of “pit & mound” topography in the making. Maybe you’ve noticed before that some areas in the woods display a pit & mound topography; It almost looks like someone excavated there some time ago. Pit & mound occurs when trees blow over creating a “pit” where the root ball was and a “mound” where the root ball now is. After a while, the tree rots away, but the excavation remains. I always thought these nautrally-occurring mounds created awesome growing sites too for plants/trees to re-establish upon.

May the forest be with you,
