Can You Spot the Grouse?

March 3, 2019

WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST?

I realize there are complaints about the “invasive” nature of honeysuckle in the Catskill Mountains and beyond. But, I have to admit that in a forest continually maturing which offers less and less young growth for wildlife cover, there are some benefits. Take this ruffed grouse for instance; A truly native game bird that is finding it more difficult to make a home in these maturing woods. Can you spot the grouse in the honeysuckle? They seem to love these abandoned fields which have filled in abundantly with honeysuckle. Even if you’re against honeysuckle, don’t worry. After the trees begin to grow between, this early-successional shrub will fall victim to succession and be shaded out over time.

May the forest be with you,
