WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST

The firewood burning season is coming to an end as spring sets in. I haven’t cleaned my chimney in about 4 years since it doesn’t seem to need it annually or more from prior cleanings. Burning dry or “seasoned” wood does help. Also, well-insulated chimneys that keep the gases warm until they exit the flue reduces creosote from forming as well. Efficient woodstoves and good burning practices matter too. As some of you may already know, creosote is that black stuff that deposits on the inner-wall of chimneys when burning inefficiently; It can ignite and lead to dangerous chimney or house-fires. There was only about a pint of creosote after 4 years; Not bad.
