WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST

I found this little tree growing as a seedling a couple of years ago inside my fence-in area where I’ve planted some fruit trees. It’s one of my favorites–the tulip poplar or yellow poplar tree. It’s not really a “poplar” but actually within the Magnolia Family and native to North America. It has a beautiful flower and tulip-like leaf. It grows over 100 feet tall and–unlike other open grown hardwoods–it normally has a strong central leader instead of multiple leaders that are more vulnerable to break or fail in the future. If you have the space, plant this tree in a field within view of your window. It grows fast.
