WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST

Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, Ulster County surely is a blast from the past. It’s the last of the 19th century mountain houses that were once popular throughout the Catskills (and Shawangunks). The Shawangunk Ridge was “the mountain” that I grew up looking at. It’s one of the most unique areas in New York State between the crazy rock formations and pyrogenic (fire-dependent) vegetation like dwarf pitch pine and lowbush blueberry. In any case, brought my kids through the “lemon-squeeze” which is a crack in the mountain with tight-spaces and ladders meandering its way to New York State’s one and only historical stone fire tower.
