WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST?
Over the last 2 days, I’ve been cutting trees over in Pawling, Dutchess County for a study led by SUNY ESF for improving habitat for New England cotton-tails. Burning bush is an exotic shrub that has become common in many parts of the Hudson Valley. Since I’ve been living up in the Catskills, I am less familiar with it; I actually didn’t know its name by site until this week. In the past, I saw 1 or 2 of these in Margaretville, Delaware County and wondered what they were; Mystery solved. The wood of this shrub is heavy for such a small plant. It produces many berries and has the weirdest bark I’ve ever seen.
