With GPS technology now available at our fingertips, it seems that the skillset of following the good ol’ map and compass is waning–and not for the better. Instead, many rely on their cell phones for journeys through the woods. However, in the event of an emergency, dead battery, bad weather, or no reception, they can be rendered useless. Orienteering is an essential skill for anyone accessing the backcountry for hikes or hunts in these mountains.
We’ll teach you the basics of reading a map, using a compass properly, and how to navigate with both. Once you’ve gotten your bearings, we will test your skills on a 3–4 mile bushwhack hike, off-trail and over rugged terrain. Follow a map and compass to a beautiful waterwall site where a campfire lunch awaits, if you can find it!
Please be prepared with proper hiking attire and water. Lunch will be provided, but you may wish to bring additional snacks.
We would like to thank Bill Kocher and Davidson’s General Store for helping make this event possible.
