WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST
One of the tallest trees in the eastern US is this tree–the eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides). Normally this tree is found in the larger valleys or floodplains of the northeast like the Hudson River Valley. This cottonwood was found by its lonesome on a small stream in the Town of Olive. Look for deeply fissured bark and triangular leaves. It’s similar to aspen but normally much larger. It shouldn’t be confused with tulip poplar which is actually in the Magnoliaceae family and is actually the tallest broadleaf tree in the eastern US.
