Red oak trees seem to have a healthy acorn crop this year. This is important for wildlife as a food source, especially with the lack of other mast crops this year, like apple. There has been a lot of deer squirrel, chipmunk, and turkey activity in oak stands this past week. A good management strategy to increase yearly acorn crops is to release oak trees from competing maple. These trees were released this morning to increase available sunlight, therefore allowing more energy to be devoted to acorn production. Find out more about our Forestry for Wildlife Program.
