WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST?
Spent a week in Upton, Long Island with CFA field staff at the New York Wildfire & Incident Management Training Academy. We took the S-130 & S-190 courses which represent Basic Wildland Firefighter training. It taught entry-level wildland firefighter skills and is often required for participation on prescribed burning activities. We’re hoping to use this qualification to gain field experience on prescribed fires at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve next year, where they burn to preserve the karner blue butterfly along with other pyrogenic flora and fauna. Hopefully, we can someday take this knowledge to the Catskills to enhance forest health.
