WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE FOREST
Lots of storm damage from high winds over the last few weeks in Ulster County. I’ve been watching this large red oak tree since 2012. It has (or had) 2 large leaders that come together in a tight spot or “v-crotch” causing moisture and decay to accumulate over time. This is normally where trees “fail” or break apart. This one narrowly missed a home. Although the other leader remains standing, there is significant decay at its base. Also, these tight crotches have “included bark” or in other words aren’t really connected like a branch is. Instead, they are growing against one another and bark actually separates them.
