About the Catskill Woodsman Education Series
Do you want to learn hands-on technical conservation skills for useful purposes here in the Catskill Mountains? CFA has designed a seasonal, modular training series to improve your skills for Catskill Mountain forest living. This multi-day educational format provides landowners with hands-on experience of the skills necessary to manage the forests, fruits, and wildlife of the Catskill Mountains. We are focused to pass on practical knowledge of forest management, wildlife management, and backyard forest-based food production to you, the active participant.
Processing Your Own Firewood
The Spring 2024 course will span three days and focus on every aspect of homeowner-scale firewood production, including a Game of Logging Level 1 course ($200 course fee included in registration price).
- Day 1 (8am to 4pm) will consist of a morning discussion of chainsaw maintenance, sharpening, and safe use. The afternoon will involve an in-depth discussion on wood heat and firewood management and selection, followed by tree selection and an introduction to crop tree management.
- Day 2 (7:30am – 5pm) will be a full day chainsaw safety certification course, Game of Logging Level 1. This nationally recognized course will teach chainsaw safety, use, maintenance, and sharpening, and directional tree felling.
- Day 3 (8am to 4pm) will get straight to work on teaching hands on firewood bucking, limbing, splitting, and stacking techniques with tips and tricks. The ins and outs of wood burning stoves, their use, best practices, maintenance, and examples of types of wood burning appliances will also be covered.
Each participant can expect to receive hands-on instruction in all aspects of the course.
Additional Information
Come prepared with your own chainsaw with all personal protective equipment (helmet, chaps, boots, eye protection, hearing protection) all three days. In addition, bring a bag lunch and water for each day. We won’t cancel for weather, so be sure you are dressed accordingly.
